Zoom online video-conferencing application became popular during the Covid-19 pandemic. Along with the enactment of restrictions and lockdown areas in almost all parts of the world, learning activities, meetings, and physical meetings are replaced by online. From here, the Zoom application that was launched in 2013 is widely used.
Eric Yuan is the figure behind the establishment of Zoom Video Communications. Yuan was born in Shandong, China, in 1970. When he was in
his 20s, he heard Bill Gates talk about the internet. This caught his attention
and his dream to move to the United States occurred.
Yuan also prepared everything, including the application of visa to the
United States government. Unfortunately, the US government refused his visa
application. Because of his strong desire, he made another request but was
refused again. After struggling for two years, Yuan finally got the visa on
ninth occasion and made it to the US in the year 1997
Moving to America is not a smooth road for Yuan. At that
time his English ability was very limited. The only provision that he could
write the coding program. Finally, he anchored at videoconferencing software
company WebEx.
A decade later, in 2007 WebEx was taken over by Cisco for $
3.2 billion and Yuan was appointed as Corporate VP of Engineering. Yuan got a
high salary in the company, but there was something that stuck his heart. He
met with many customers and most of them said they were not satisfied with the
company's videoconferencing services.
In 2011, Yuan began developing software that he named Zoom
with 40 other engineers from Cisco. Zoom was then launched in 2013 as a free
application that users can use, either through mobile gadgets, laptops, or
desktops.
In just a few years, the Zoom has recruited 1,700 employees and
reached 40 million users in only two years since launch. In the beginning, Zoom
had to compete with Skype, Google, and Cisco themselves. Until 2015, Yuan did
not have its own marketing team so Zoom marketing only relied on word of mouth.
Zoom continues to gain popularity, by 2018 the company's
revenue reached $ 330 million. To create customer satisfaction, Yuan intervened to be involved in the customer service process and respond to their
complaints.
To become a more user-friendly organization, Yuan himself
intervened and was involved in the entire customer service process and
responded privately via email to customers who were dissatisfied with their
services.
As the world faces the Covid-19 pandemic in which almost a
third of the world is locked-down, professionals remain committed to carrying
out their duties. Despite competing with Google, Microsoft, and Apple, Zoom
seems to have loyal and growing users.
One of the main features of Zoom is that a host can invite
more than 100 conference participants. Both the host and the participant can
also share the presentation screen during the live video conference.
